Poker Hill School, founded in 1972 by Lucille Ingalls and Ann Crocker, has a rich history that spans over five decades. The school was initially established in a remodeled old barn in Underhill, Vermont, with a commitment to child-directed learning. This philosophy, which emphasizes the autonomy of children in their own learning process, remains the cornerstone of Poker Hill School's approach to education.
In 1978, Beth and David London, along with Gay Steimle, purchased the school from Ingalls and Crocker, and continued to evolve the philosophy of child-directed learning. In 1983, a fire destroyed the original school building, but the program relocated to St. Thomas Church while the new building was being constructed.
After reopening in its current location in September 1983, the partnership between Steimle and the Londons came to an end, and Poker Hill School, Inc. was established as a non-profit corporation. Since then, the school has served over 1400 children, with many "second-generation" students attending.
The State of Vermont has recognized Poker Hill School with awards for early childhood excellence, and since 2014, the school has participated in the Step Ahead Recognition System (STARS), Vermont's quality recognition system for childcare, preschool, and afterschool programs. Poker Hill School has maintained a 5-star rating since 2022.
The Building
The Poker Hill School building is designed to foster creativity and imagination. It features floor-to-ceiling windows on the south and east sides, a library, dance room/gym, playhouse, full kitchen, woodworking shop, greenhouse, and areas for art, science, music, and dramatic play.
The playground is equally impressive, with a large sand area, tunnels, a playhouse, swings, slides, tricycles, and areas for climbing and running. The school also has an extensive garden, a barn, and a nature trail.
Our Philosophy
At Poker Hill School, we believe that learning developmentally is essential. We nurture and guide each child's growth, but trust them to develop in their own unique way. We support each child's autonomy as an individual within a caring and democratic community, striving to make each child feel respected and valued.
Our teachers facilitate children's growth by encouraging them to make significant decisions about their own learning path. This approach allows children to explore their interests and passions, leading to a deeper understanding of themselves and the world around them.
Community Involvement
Poker Hill School is committed to engaging with the local community. We believe that partnerships between schools, businesses, and families are essential for creating a supportive environment that benefits everyone involved.
