Is there a chance the golems will drop the giant's gloves in that battle with the golems in the Eblan cave for the blood sword?

Yes. I got my second set from that battle. (My first from the Sleep Blade chest battle in Eblan Castle.)

Compared to other gloves/gauntlets available at that time, are the Giant's Gloves that much more effective? I'm just curious because when I get around to playing this game again, I'd like to try to get the rarest weapons/armor as soon as possible, since I've already beaten this game multiple times….

Yes, they are better than what you have at the time.
- +10 Str (and +10 Vit) boost will at least increase the attack multiplier by 1 (meaning more damage being dealt)
- Resistance vs Giants – you will be fighting a number of them anyways, including the Steel Golem, Mad Ogre, and Mythril Golem
- Resistance vs Mini – you will find that very useful for one specific attack that's evil… (hint: that attack is used in the Sylph's Cave)
The only negative is that it has no evasion bonus.. but that's not too big a deal since you get a decent gain in defense. It also has no magic defense, but considering that the best (Mythril) Gloves only provide you 2 magic defense points, that's not much of a loss, plus Spirit protection is virtually useless at this point. Only the Ghost Knight is a Spirit monster (and not a threatening one) and that's the 2nd to last Spirit monster in the game.

Hmmm….. Note to self: Next time you start playing this game, be on the lookout for rare items such as those. Right now, I'm just out of Baron on my way to the Mist Cave, so I should probably keep a eye on things… 😛
