MGM Grand Poker Room Review 2024

The MGM Grand poker room reopened on July 3, 2020 after the COVID-19 closure. It is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Cash Games at MGM Grand

There are 25 tables at the MGM Grand poker room. Most cash games are no limit Texas hold'em. Tables seat up to nine players.

  • The only regular game is 1/2 no-limit Texas hold'em. Buy-ins are permitted from $100 to $600 or the largest stack, whichever is greater.
  • When 2/5 happens, it has a $300 minimum and $1,500 cap.
  • The occasional 5/10 no-limit hold'em game has a $1,000 minimum buy-in and no cap.

MGM Grand Poker Tournaments

There are three no-limit hold'em tournaments daily. The start times are 11am, 7pm, and 11pm. The buy-in is $130. There are $100 re-buys and an add-on. Players start with 25,000 chips. The re-buy is also 25,000 chips. The add-on is 50,000 chips.

  • Saturday's 7pm event is a $200 tournament with a double green bounty.

MGM Grand Poker Tournament Series Issues

The MGM Grand poker room had a tough December 2023. The poker room tried to back out of the advertised guaranteed prize pool for a tournament series after attendance was lower than expected. Before that, a large social media account with a history of shilling tried to help.

A Las Vegas Twitter "influencer" account called Vegas Starfish with close ties to MGM Grand's poker management promoted the event and related overlay before the announcement that guarantees would drop. Vegas Starfish failed to disclose her relationship with the MGM Grand poker room during this promotion, which is off-topic compared to her usual content.

After an outcry from the poker world, MGM Grand walked back its attempt to not pay the overlay. While that is great that the poker room paid its promised prize pools, how it handled the situation was far from ideal.

Vegas Advantage Believes

You should think twice before playing poker tournaments at MGM Grand. It only did right after a massive backlash, and appears to have resorted to deceptive advertising practices leading up to it. One should also be skeptical of anything published by Vegas Starfish's social media accounts and companies associated with it.

MGM Grand Poker Promotions

There are several promotions at the MGM Grand poker room:

  • Hourly high hands and payouts for hands that are quads or better. These have a progressive meter based on the length of time since it last hit. The meter caps at $599.
  • Freerolls for active cash game players.
  • Players clocked in with an MGM Rewards card receive $2 per hour.

Environment

The MGM Grand poker room is between a sportsbook and a bar. It has 25 spacious tables and expands during major events. The chairs are among the most comfortable in town at a poker table. Many dealers and floor people have years in the business, which helps create a professional poker-playing environment. It is far enough away from the casino floor that noise and smoke are generally not an issue.

Rake

MGM Grand rakes 10% up to $5. It caps at $3 for games with four or fewer players. There is also a $2 promotional drop.
