DBS V12 for 007: Casino Royale (2006)

On January 16, 2006, Aston Martin released limited details about their new sports car, which would be James Bond's vehicle in the upcoming film Casino Royale. Although very little information was known about the DBS, one of the most interesting features was that Daniel Craig, the new Bond actor, had visited AM Gaydon factory on January 13, 2006, and driven a car similar to DB9, as only styling buck was available at the time.

However, by surprise, AM released some chosen photos of the Bond car in early May 2006, but without any technical information. The prototype workshop had completed their task and sent two functional 'hero' cars to the film producers on April 30, 2006, so that they could be used for close-up shots and driving scenes.

The DBS V12 seemed very similar to DB9, but with some differences such as a new front end (with carbon fiber splitter) and rear boot lid spoiler, and deeper chassis and more vents on the bonnet. The interior of the car was wrapped in Alcantara and DBS V12 had manual shift with illuminated shift pattern; six-speed Graziano gearbox from V8 Vantage.

The car was a strict two-seater with a rear space for placing racing helmet, fire extinguisher, and weapon holder, features that were never designed for production cars. DBS V12 also had side indicator repeaters on wing vents and clear rear cluster lights, like those previewed on the Rapide concept.

In addition to the two 'hero' cars, AML had to prepare three pre-production DB9s as look-alike stunt cars. The DBS V12 manual was also supplied to the film crew for stunt drivers to practice.

The stunt scene that happened when DBS swerved to avoid Bond girl, Vesper Lynd, who was tied and left on a country road at night in Montenegro. Initially, the team practiced at Dunsfold Aerodrome near Guildford with a damaged BMW 5 series, which when driven up a 12-inch ramp at 65 mph would launch three to four times as desired. The team then moved to the filming location at Millbrook proving ground hill circuit in Bedfordshire. Practice continued with DB9 manual, but the car refused to launch due to hard suspension and low gravity center.

For the first actual take, the team used a stunt DBS car and installed a nitrogen gas ram that would be used to influence the road surface at the right time to start the car rotating. At 75 mph, the ram was activated, and DBS began to rotate. And did not stop until it had completed seven full rotations, Guinness World Record.

The car landed back on its wheels and Adam Kirley, the driver, walked away without injury. Aston Martin kept one of the 'hero' cars and also the second DBS car that set the record, and it was displayed at Kensington Palace Centenary Celebration on July 2013.

The color of Bond's car known as "Casino Royale" became a standard DBS color when production began later in 2007. As of 2017, this car is being exhibited as part of "Bond in Motion" near Covent Garden in London.

It is somewhat unusual that Aston Martin released some chosen photos of the DBS V12 before the film's release, but without any technical information. However, these images show that the car has a unique design and features different from other cars.
